Bolsover was established as a market town almost 800 years ago and markets

are still held here to the present day. It is now the administrative centre for

the district of Bolsover and along with businesses provides jobs for local people.

Like many of the neighbouring local towns it was for many years until the 1990’s

well known for coalmining and processing.

The area has a rich and varied history with the first reference appearing in the

Doomsday book of 1086. The town centre has been designated a conservation

area in recognition of its special and architectural interest and there are 21 grade

listed 1 or 2 buildings there. It also boasts Bolsover Castle, flagship English Heritage site in the

East Midlands.

The primary role of the town is a local centre for Bolsover and the surrounding villages of Carr Vale, Shuttlewood, Stanfree, Bentinck and Whaley for which the Town Council provides various services. The town has a range of shops, offices and facilities for local people as well as the Assembly and Bainbridge Halls which provide up to date facilities for the community. Whaley is also has a Community Hall.

The town is well served by free car parks, the Town Hall can be found on Cotton Street, Middle Street car park is close by. Junction 29A of the M1 will provide direct access from 2010.
